An October book study we do as a class is We're Going On A Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger.
Similar to "We're Going On A Bear Hunt", the children in the story embark on a hunt that leads them to various settings and situations. It's a fun fall book, and it pairs nicely with an autumn or leaf theme in Kindergarten and First Grade.
WE'RE GOING ON A LEAF HUNT BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
We're Going on a Leaf Hunt has students enjoying a fall story while learning seasonal topics and themes. The characters in the story find various kinds of leaves from different types of trees, and in many colors.
This seasonal book can be used to build reading comprehension strategies and story element concepts. It is wonderful for making text to self connections, as your students may relate to going out exploring and hunting for things outdoors.
Your students can help brainstorm about other things they may wish to hunt for with their friends!
Students can dig deeper into the story to recall story events and think about the characters' problems and solutions.
Students can make inferences, visualize the story, and think about the characters and the settings that they visit.
This comprehensive book study unit includes literacy activities, reading printables, book companion activities, comprehension worksheets, and a craft.
This book companion unit can be used as a whole class activity, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
The story's pattern makes it a great springboard for introducing students to story flow maps. This is included in the unit as well!
Here is the story flow map we did for this book:
The pictures and arrows have Velcro on the back of them, so that students can place them in order on the flow chart as the story is read.
The characters in the story encounter a skunk and retrace their steps all the way back home. At this point in the story, the students can manipulate the arrows to show the new direction that the story takes:
This story is great for sequencing events, learning about types of leaves, and is a perfect read aloud for Kindergarten and First Grade in the fall!
WE'RE GOING ON A LEAF HUNT CRAFT
This book craftivity is a great way to showcase student learning, and makes a fun seasonal bulletin board display!
Our class sorted leaves by size, shape, and color...
...then we went outside on a "real life" leaf hunt around the schoolyard!
(Thankfully ours was skunk free...)
Would you be willing to share your printables for the story flow map you created for "We're Going On a Leaf Hunt?" I just love them! I teach a small preschool group out of my home and we will be reading this story in the near future.
ReplyDeleteThanks:)
Is there a printable version of your flow chart? We would love to use this idea!
