Our book study this past week was Mrs. Wishy-Washy's Christmas by Joy Cowley. Students LOVE Mrs. Wishy-Washy, and this read aloud is perfect for the holiday season!
This Christmas favorite features Mrs. Wishy-Washy and her animal friends...all about making mistakes, being sorry, receiving forgiveness, and showing love. The spirit of Christmas at its best!
MRS WISHY-WASHY'S CHRISTMAS BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
In this activity, students worked with the story's vocabulary as they matched words from the story with their picture cards.
My book activities unit to go with Mrs. Wishy-Washy's Christmas contains companion activities that help to connect this engaging read aloud with important reading skills.
It's full of literacy printables, reading companion worksheets, lesson ideas, a class book, a craftivity, a write the room activity, matching cards, character cards, and MORE!
This book activities unit includes literacy components that will help your Kindergarten and First Grade students practice key reading skills as they engage in meaningful activities they will love!
This unit is packed with fun activities that will help your students work on story elements, character traits, story retell, writing activities, sequencing events, problem & solution, making text to self connections, and visualizing the story by making mental images. The unit also includes activities to develop story vocabulary, define the author's purpose, think about the story's main idea or theme, offer opinions and advice, recognize cause & effect, and check for understanding with comprehension questions...and MORE!
This book study unit can be used as a whole class activity, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
This companion unit for Mrs. Wishy-Washy's Christmas will save you tons of time, is no prep, and is great to leave for a sub!
The unit includes a class book! Students can each make themselves in the cold tin tub using the template, then compile the pages and add the cover. This Wishy-Washy book will be a student favorite in your classroom library!
This Wishy-Washy craft makes a fun bulletin board display, to showcase student learning!
Here are some more of the literacy activities we did throughout the week:
READ, WRITE, STAMP
This activity has students reading farm animal words, tracing the letters of the words, and stamping the letters.
The stamping book can be found here.
SIGHT WORD ACTIVITIES
Students used letter tiles to spell words from the story.
The word cards can be found here.
The sight word puzzles can be found here.
They also assembled Christmas tree sight word puzzles.
The Christmas tree sight word puzzles can be found here.
WISHY-WASHY MAZES
There are four different mazes, which can be found here.
WISHY-WASHY COLOR BY NUMBER
Color-by-number is found here.
WRITING CENTER
We used Wishy-Washy stationery in the Writing Center, found here.
All of the above activities, and many more, can be found at Making Learning Fun.
WISHY-WASHY NUMBER GAME
I put numeral flash cards on my pocket chart.
{This lesson focused on recognition of numerals 1-20}.
Pictures of items from the story are hidden behind random numbers on the chart. The pictures I hid are
A Wishy-Washy twist on Fran's Thanksgiving activity.
Students came up to the chart, pointed to a number, and said the number aloud. If they correctly identified it, they got to take the number off of the pocket chart & see if anything was hiding behind their card. The students felt so lucky when they found a picture behind their card! The "winner" was the student who found Mrs. Wishy-Washy.
SIGHT WORD STORY
A great little Christmas-themed sight word book, used to introduce the word "it". It builds on previously learned words "is" and "a".
It is from Hubbard's Cupboard, and can be found here.

I love your activities! I just finished a 3 week unit on the gingerbread man. My colleagues thought I was nuts when I said I would do G'man for 3 weeks--they couldn't imagine how I could keep it "fresh" and interesting for that long (kindergarten). But my kids loved it, and by the end of the unit, I didn't have to ask them what was different/same with each story--they were in a rush to let me know!
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower to your blog, and I love what I see! I wish I had the idea of the neat gingerbread house chart--they would have loved it....there's always next year!

I just started following your blog. I followed a link over from the organized classroom. I teach Kindergarten and have a blog, but I haven't really gotten in the habit of posting much. It looks like you have some great resources here.

I have been a loyal follower of your blog since the summer, but actually just joined as a member. You have wonderful ideas and inspire me to adapt some of the activities into my own grade 1 classroom. I have my own blog, but am still relatively new to the world of blogging.
