Who Is Sammy the Snowman? {attribute sorting freebie}

Every January I do this attribute sorting activity with my class. My students sit in a circle, and I lay these pictures on the carpet:

I tell them that one of these snowmen is Sammy the Snowman. 

For fun, I ask them, "Which one is Sammy the Snowman?"

Every year, several little hands shoot up in the air, because they just know which one is Sammy.

And every year I open my eyes WIDE and say, "You know which one is Sammy the Snowman?"

"YES!" They cry, and several jump up to point to one of the pictures.

"How do you know that one's Sammy?" I ask.

They look at me, perplexed.

I ask, "Are you sure that's him?"

{Do you have any idea how hard it is to convince them that they don't know? Oy vey.}

I go on to inform them that in fact, they do not know which one Sammy the Snowman is, but after hearing my clues, they will figure it out together.

After a clue is read, we pause to look carefully at each picture. Could this be Sammy? Why or why not? Each question reveals one snowman that does not have the attribute in the clue, and it is removed or turned over. We continue on until we discover who really is Sammy the Snowman.

They are always so engaged in this activity...and are so excited to see which one he really is!
