The ENORMOUS Kinder'garden' & Ice Cream Art

We've been reading several books about growing things in the garden.

This book includes some very familiar characters that we learned about in September, in our Nursery Rhyme unit!

These books are similar in that the characters need to use teamwork in order to get the job done. The stories are excellent for comparing and contrasting activities. They also provide a springboard for learning about plants, such as does the food grow under the ground, on the ground, or above the ground...lots of expansion opportunities!

In keeping with the ENORMOUS theme, our parent volunteer led my class to create an

ENORMOUS

ice cream cone!

We used very loooong pieces of paper!

First, students sketched scoops of ice cream on top of  a pre-drawn cone. They had to start with making large scoops, then drawing them progressively smaller until they ran out of room at the top of their paper. Most made cherries on top :)

Then they outlined their sketches with pastels.

They also used the pastels to add details to their ice cream scoops:

chocolate chips, gumballs, sprinkles, etc.

Using tempra paint, students painted over top of their ice cream scoops, using lots of colors to depict various flavors.
