This week we read Rob Scotton's book Love, Splat in our Kindergarten class for Valentine's Day. Love, Splat is a fun read aloud for Kindergarten and First Grade, and these reading companion activities and craft made literacy learning even more fun!
LOVE SPLAT BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
We had so much fun reading the book Love Splat and doing these activities during Valentine week. We also LOVED doing the Love Splat craft, and it made the cutest bulletin board display! (see photos below)
This Love Splat book study is packed with activities that help students work on story elements, character traits, story retell, writing activities, giving opinions and advice, making mental images, making inferences, problem and solution, making text to self connections, reading comprehension, and much more!
The Love Splat book companion unit can be used as a whole class activity (that's what we did!), during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a set and you're ready to go!
This book companion activities unit will save you tons of planning time, is no prep, and is great to leave for a sub!
This guided reading unit includes lots of activities, so you can differentiate to suit your students' learning abilities and needs.
LOVE SPLAT CRAFT
It's fun to wrap up a book study with a craft! This Love Splat craftivity turned out so cute! (It was pajama day at school, which is why they are working in their pjs :)
The Love Splat craft made a sweet bulletin board display :)
The template for the Love Splat craft is included in the unit!

LOVE SPLAT FREEBIES
Perfect for Valentine's week!
We did a matching activity based on the characters in the story
and brainstormed words that rhyme with 'Splat'
If you would like a copy of the rhyming page and character match, you can download them by clicking the link below.
I LOVE that your kids had pajamas day on the same day as Valentine's Day. Your Splat pictures are adorable. I'm hosting a linky for people to share their Valentine's Day pictures, I'd love for you to link up this post if you have time. Enjoy your weekend.

I hopped over from Stacy's linky...*LOVE* your splat craft. My class made them too! We were practicing writing using future tense, so on their heart, they wrote the sentence 'I will always love you.' and used them as their parents valentine!
ReplyDeleteSplat is such a fun character! Yours turned out super cute! =)

I found you from Stacy's link...LOVE the Splat activities, thanks for sharing! Now I have some great ideas to add to next Valentine's Day! We had PJ day last week, too, but the day after Valentine's Day! After all that candy it's nice to have the option to wear pants with elastic :)
ReplyDeleteDo you happen to have templates for Splat? I might not be seeing them :)
ReplyDeleteHi Samantha, the templates were just cut free-hand!
