Each year, to wrap up our Dr. Seuss unit, I invite parents to come to our classroom to participate in various Dr. Seuss activities with their Kindergarten child.
I set up several stations around the classroom that they could choose from. The event lasts for an hour, and they rotate through as many centers as they like.
My students made some Cats in Hats to decorate our classroom door; the printable was from Hubbard's Cupboard.
BOOK NOOK
One station featured our collection of Dr. Seuss books that parents could read to their children.
I have several characters from the stories that students can hold as they are being read to.
GREEN EGGS & HAM INITIAL SOUNDS
At this activity, the students and their parents matched the green letters (yolks) with the pictures that start with that letter (eggs). This activity is from Making Learning Fun.
GREEN EGGS & HAM ALPHABET BINGO
Students played alphabet Bingo against their parents.
ONE FISH, TWO FISH ESTIMATION
Students had to estimate how many fish would fit into the fishbowl without overlapping. They then tried it out to see how close their estimate was to the actual number of fish that fit inside.
ONE FISH, TWO FISH PATTERNS
Students copied and extended the patterns of red fish, blue fish.
FISHING FOR LETTERS
Using magnetic fishing poles, students caught fish with letters on them, then matched them to the corresponding letters in the 'sea'.
CAT IN THE HAT SCENE-MAKER
I found this magnetic set at Zellers several years ago when the Cat in the Hat movie came out in theatres. Students use the magnets to recreate scenes from the book.
CAT IN THE HAT TOYS
Burger King featured Cat in the Hat toys back when the movie came out. I snagged these on Ebay.
'THING' PAPER BAG PUPPETS
This template is from obSEUSSed. I shrunk down the overall size so that the template would fit on a small paper bag.
I thought it would be cute to use my students' pictures for this craft, so I cut & glued their faces onto the sheets.
DR. SEUSS'S ABC BOARD GAME
THE CAT IN THE HAT FLOOR PUZZLES
NAME SYLLABLE SORT
CAT IN THE HAT UPPERCASE/LOWERCASE LETTER MATCH
CAT'S HAT COUNT
Students and their parents each got a sheet of paper full of cat's hats. They took turns rolling a die, and coloring in that many hats. The first one to color in all of their hats was the winner.
