I read Big Dog, Little Dog by P.D. Eastman and we talked about how God makes animals different sizes. The class decided that Daisy would be considered a small dog. Discussion turned to people, and how we are all different sizes too. Despite the sense that 'bigger is better', we are the perfect size for our own self, and are just-right.
I took some yarn and measured each student. I added their picture to the end, so we could see how tall everyone is.
Students used their non-standard measuring tools to find 3 things in the classroom that they are BIGGER than, and 3 things in the classroom that they are smaller than.
smaller than the easel, pocket chart, door
smaller than the whole school, the bench, the door

I need a puppy! What a great idea to do for measurement! I can only imagine how much your kids loved having a puppy visit! I love your blog and visit often. Thank you for inspiring! Now I have to find someone with a puppy I can borrow!
