HI FLY GUY
When I came into Grade 2 this year, I just knew I could not teach a love of reading from the old basal readers that were on the shelf. I want my kiddos to feel successful reading chapter books. I want to introduce them to different genres. And I want to inspire a LOVE of reading using books by authors who've written a series, so that my students will seek out MORE by that author!
So began my newest 'hobby'...creating book studies...which I LOVE! I try to jam-pack the activities so that students learn various important story elements, will close read to recall information from the text, will make connections {text-to-self, etc}, and will offer opinions. They'll learn new vocabulary, decide which elements of the story can be fiction or non-fiction, and so on!
Our first book study was Hi! Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold. We LOVE Fly Guy! Not only is the book engaging and funny, it is a chapter book, which gives students the much-needed feeling of success at this stage! We work on the book for about a month. At the end of our study we celebrate with Paper Bag Book Club!
HI FLY GUY BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
This book study unit is packed with fun activities that will help your First Grade and Second Grade students with story elements, making predictions, character traits, making text to self connections, author's purpose, main idea, making inferences, vocabulary, writing, giving opinions and advice, problem and solution, story retell, reading comprehension, and much more!
These activities can be used for whole class instruction, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
This Hi Fly Guy book companion will save you tons of planning time, is no prep, and is great to leave for a sub!
Want to make sure you are hitting the reading standards for First Grade or Second Grade? This resource includes ELA standards charts for Common Core, TEKS and VA SOL, showing you exactly which skills your students are learning while doing these activities!
This fun book, paired with these book companion activities, help students in First Grade and Second Grade practice important literacy and reading comprehension skills in an engaging way!

What a great way to top off our book learning, by having a Book Club-style discussion, complete with paper bags of popcorn to enjoy!
