JUNIE B JONES IS CAPTAIN FIELD DAY
Our book studies have featured books of a different genre every month. This month my class enjoyed the realistic fiction found in Junie B. Jones is Captain Field Day by Barbara Park. Students LOVE Junie B Jones and all of her antics! This fun read aloud, paired with these book companion activities, helps students in First Grade and Second Grade practice essential literacy and reading comprehension skills in an engaging way!
JUNIE B JONES IS CAPTAIN FIELD DAY BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
As always, before we begin a book study we gather into groups to discuss what the book might be about, what genre it could be, and who may be some characters in the story.
I know that sometimes Junie B. gets a bad rap because she does not always speak perfectly {grammatically}. I chose to do this book with my class because it provides a great example of character.
It made for a great lesson on how the character changes in the story. It also showed how you can tell a lot about the characters by their actions. Junie thought that as Captain Field Day she got to be the boss of everyone. She even wanted to dress like a super hero!
Throughout the day, however, Junie changed from a bossy leader to what a captain should be, a team supporter.
This book study unit is packed with fun activities that will help your First Grade and Second Grade students with story elements, making predictions, character traits, making text to self connections, author's purpose, main idea, making inferences, vocabulary, writing, giving opinions and advice, problem and solution, story retell, reading comprehension, and much more!
These activities can be used for whole class instruction, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
This Junie B Jones is Captain Field Day book companion will save you tons of planning time, is no prep, and is great to leave for a sub!
Want to make sure you are hitting the reading standards for First Grade or Second Grade? This resource includes ELA standards charts for Common Core, TEKS and VA SOL, showing you exactly which skills your students are learning while doing these activities!
What I LOVE about doing novel studies is that I always choose books that are part of a series. That way, when students see how much they LOVE the story we're doing as a class, they seek out more books by that author during read to self time.
And isn't getting them to LOVE reading the whole point? :)
