In February we started our fractions unit by learning about symmetry and lines of symmetry. Here is an activity that helped students learn it in a very hands-on, visual way!
I gave each group a bucket of materials to make their symmetrical shapes with.
One group had pattern blocks, one had Unifix cubes, and the other got colored toothpicks.
Everyone got a ruler to use as their line of symmetry.
This helped them to keep both halves of their 'creations' separate.
They had to keep making sure that whatever they built on one side was copied/repeated on the other.
