Building Math Fact Fluency

Math fact fluency is such an important element in math learning!

 Every year students come into my class who struggle with basic addition and subtraction. They attempt to use their fingers, try to reference the number line, or just make a guess. Unfortunately our math program makes little attempt to have students become fluent in addition and subtraction facts either. So this year I started having my students do Math Like a Ninja! {Yes, quick and stealthy!}

These math booklets provide my students with lots of addition and subtraction fluency practice. EVERY day I begin each math lesson with a timed speed drill, to help students master their addition and subtraction math facts.

Each time a booklet is mastered (finished within the time frame and error-free) they will move on to the next level. The levels are created in a fun ninja-themed format, to help foster motivation!

 I know not every teacher is on board with math drills. But I see each year how kids struggle with simple facts, and this takes up one minute of the math lesson! In that one minute, each day, they are developing amazing fluency!

This activity works well for ANY level of math fluency, as they work on the booklet that is at their own level. Differentiated for every learner! And as they move on to the next level, they are so proud :)
