During this month of all-things-Seuss, it is a great time to practice the phonemic awareness skill of rhyme! Especially since many of Dr. Seuss's books are filled with rhyme, which act as the perfect springboard.
Here are a few fun activities to help students with their rhyming skills.
RHYMING BRIDGE IS FALLING DOWN
It's played like London Bridge is Falling Down, and is sung to the same tune.
Two students are the 'bridge', the rest make a line-up and take turns passing under the bridge as they sing:
Rhyming bridge is falling down,
falling down,
falling down,
Rhyming bridge is falling down
My fair lady-o.
Whoever gets caught in the bridge has to come up with a pair of words that rhyme before they are released.
eg. bear, chair
Play continues until everyone has a turn getting caught & making their rhyme.
To aid those who are not yet confident in their rhyming abilities, give a prompt such as:
Can you think of a word that rhymes with ....
This activity was so much fun, and is a great way to reinforce phonemic awareness skills while getting up and moving around the room!

RHYMING READ THE ROOM
Active learning! Get students moving around the classroom looking for the picture cards. Then see if they can identify which cards have rhymes and which do not.
WORD FAMILIES
Using alphabet cards and word family mats, students manipulate the beginning sounds to create word families. A recording sheet is provided.
REAL OR SILLY?
Using another fun learning tool- highlighters!- students identify which words are 'real' and which words are 'silly'.
