WE DON'T EAT OUR CLASSMATES
Have you seen the book We Don't Eat our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins? It is my new favorite back to school read aloud! Your Kindergarten and First Grade students will LOVE reading about a dinosaur going to school with children (and her temptation to eat everyone!) The book is fantastic for discussing how to treat others. This entertaining back to school story, paired with these book companion activities will help students practice essential literacy and reading comprehension skills, in a fun and engaging way!
WE DON'T EAT OUR CLASSMATES BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
Penelope Rex is nervous to start school...and what's worse, her class is filled with children! So she ate them, because children are delicious!
Here are a couple of my favorite pages in this book:

...look where she's pointing :)
We Don't Eat Our Classmates is a great book for the beginning of the school year. It shares an important message for students, when they see throughout the story that Penelope has to learn how everyone is the same on the inside. Your students will LOVE Penelope the dinosaur, as she learns how to make friends at school!
This book study unit is packed with fun activities that will help your Kindergarten and First Grade students with story elements, making predictions, character traits, making text to self connections, author's purpose, main idea, making inferences, vocabulary, writing, giving opinions and advice, problem and solution, story retell, reading comprehension, and much more!
These activities can be used for whole class instruction, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
This We Don't Eat Our Classmates book companion will save you tons of planning time, is no prep, and is great to leave for a sub!
Want to make sure you are hitting the reading standards for Kindergarten or First Grade? This resource includes ELA standards charts for Common Core, TEKS and VA SOL, showing you exactly which skills your students are learning while doing these activities!
The unit includes lots of activities, so you can differentiate to suit your students' learning abilities and needs.
WE DON'T EAT OUR CLASSMATES CLASS BOOK
This class book is a fun way for students to write about what you SHOULD do with your classmates :) Students will write and illustrate on their own pages using the templates provided, then assemble the pages into a book and place it in your classroom library. It's sure to be a class favorite!
WE DON'T EAT OUR CLASSMATES CRAFT
This writing craftivity has students writing about what they do with their classmates at school. This craft makes a cute Back to School bulletin board display, to showcase student learning!
