MITTEN THEMED BOOKS FOR WINTER
Is anyone else finished with winter? It is so cold and snowy, I am ready for it to be over. Meanwhile...
Let's continue on in this season with some of kids' favorite books about mittens!
It is fun to do a mitten theme, because there are so many activities you can do that tie in learning objectives. Matching, making pairs, symmetry, counting by twos, the possibilities are endless!
Of course, there are lots of literacy objectives that can be introduced and practiced using mitten themed books. Here are some ideas to get you started:
THE MISSING MITTEN MYSTERY
The Missing Mitten Mystery has Annie (along with her dog Oscar) searching for the mitten she's lost after a long day of playing in the snow.
Here are some activities we've done with this book:
THE MITTEN
Students can relate to Nicki losing a mitten in the snow...but Jan Brett makes the story fun by having several forest animals burrow inside of the mitten to stay warm. From a tiny field mouse to a large bear, they all squeeze in! A cute story with a fun ending, The Mitten is a great book to teach about sequencing events and characters in the story.
Here are some activities we've done with this book:
THE MITTEN TREE
Mittens for the children mysteriously appear hanging on a blue spruce tree by the bus stop. Who is making them and hanging them in the tree?
THREE LITTLE KITTENS
The three little kittens have lost their mittens...what will happen now? This book is a classic, and perfect for a mitten theme!
