STELLALUNA
I received a copy of the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon from a first grade teacher. I was her student teacher at the time, and she gave me this book as a start to building up my own library for my future classroom. :)
STELLALUNA BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
Over the years I have read this book to my students in the fall. It's about Stellaluna, a bat who becomes separated from her mother, and she ends up living with a family of birds. Needless to say, birds and bats do not eat, sleep, or act in the same manner. I just love how this book is about friendship and also allows students to explore the similarities and differences between birds and bats!
Over the years I have pieced together some activities to go with this book.
Children love animals, and this book does a great job of describing birds and bats and their habits. Bats are fascinating creatures, but they are a little creepy :)
I pulled out the learning standards lists (Common Core, TEKS, VA SOL) and made a comprehensive literacy book study companion pack to go with the story. Kindergarten and First Grade student learning checklists are included in the unit.
Using this literacy unit, students develop their reading comprehension skills by making text to self connections, visualizing, giving their opinions, considering the author's purpose, and retelling the story.
Students also think about the story's main idea, the character traits, setting, and make inferences.
This book study unit can be used as a whole class activity, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
STELLALUNA CRAFT
I have included a Stellaluna craftivity in the pack. This craft has students reflecting on the story or writing about their favorite part... and it makes a cute bulletin board display to showcase student learning!
