THE UGLY PUMPKIN
The Ugly Pumpkin by Dave Horowitz is a great read for fall, Halloween, or Thanksgiving in Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade. It's a fun seasonal twist on The Ugly Duckling.
THE UGLY PUMPKIN BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
The Ugly Pumpkin has waited all through the month for someone to take him home for Halloween, but nobody wants him because he looks different. He's an ugly pumpkin! So off he goes, feeling sad and lonely, not sure where he fits in. When Thanksgiving arrives, he discovers where he fits in...because it turns out he is actually a squash! He celebrates Thanksgiving with the other squash, and is happy to have found his place.
Your Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade students will love developing their literacy skills with this Halloween and Thanksgiving read aloud that delivers a great plot twist!
I have created a pack of fun book companion activities to go with The Ugly Pumpkin. My book studies contain literacy activities that help to connect engaging read alouds, like The Ugly Pumpkin, with important reading skills.
These activities will help your students work on story elements, character traits, story retell, writing activities, problem & solution, making text to self connections, and reading comprehension.
This book study unit can be used for whole class learning, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
This companion unit will save you tons of time, is no prep, and is great to leave for a sub!
The activities in this literacy unit are aligned with Common Core, TEKS, and VA SOL learning standards, and checklists for the standards are included in the unit!
THE UGLY PUMPKIN CRAFT
This Ugly Pumpkin unit includes a fun wrap up craft where students design their own ugly pumpkins! (Templates are included.) They can write a story retell or about their favorite part of the story. This Ugly Pumpkin craft makes a fun Thanksgiving or Halloween bulletin board display, to showcase student learning.
