THE MITTEN TREE
We love the sweet book The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen as a winter read aloud, and for guided reading as a literacy activities unit! This book is great to discuss selfless acts and random acts of kindness to people you don't know.
THE MITTEN TREE BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
An old woman looks out her window to find children playing outside. It's winter, and she notices that some children do not have mittens to wear. She knits some mittens, then hangs them in the tree by the bus stop so that the children will see them as they wait for the bus.
It makes her so happy to see the children taking the mittens off of the tree and putting them on to keep them warm in the winter. The children wonder...where are the mittens coming from?
Her random acts of kindness helped many children keep warm in the winter. Then she notices something strange herself...who is leaving baskets of yarn on her doorstep?
