TODAY I WILL FLY!
Today I Will Fly! is the first book in a series by Mo Willems featuring best friends Elephant and Piggie. The books are great for beginning readers, as there are only a few words on each page. The books are written in a comic book style, like a simple graphic novel, so they are perfect for early readers in Kindergarten and First Grade!
In Today I Will Fly, Piggie announces to her friend Elephant that she will fly. Elephant assures Piggie that it will not fly today - she will never fly.
Piggie is not deterred by Elephant's lack of support. She simply says she is going to try. And she does. First Piggie tries to fly by flapping her arms. It doesn't work.
Elephant rolls his eyes, and tells Piggie that she needs help. She thanks Elephant for the tip, and goes off to get help.
Piggie has a scary dog chase her around, barking loudly. It scares her so much, she leaps high into the air. Piggie is excited, saying she did it! She flew! She thanks the dog for its help. Elephant tells Piggie that she actually didn't fly...she jumped. Piggie heads off to try again.
Piggie meets a bird, and asks it to help her fly. And it does! The bird holds onto a rope that is tied around Piggie, as it flies in the air. Piggie trails along below the bird. Elephant sees Piggie in the air and is so excited that Piggie can fly. Piggie corrects Elephant and says that she's actually not flying, she's getting help from the bird.
Elephant has been inspired by Piggie's success, and declares that tomorrow he will fly. Piggie wishes him good luck :)
