The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is a spring must-have read aloud in your Kindergarten and First Grade classroom! This award winning picture book features a very hungry caterpillar who eats its way through the week, transforming from an egg on a leaf to a beautiful butterfly. This story is great to use when teaching your Kindergarten and First Grade students caterpillar and butterfly life cycle themed learning. I have used this read aloud every spring in my Kindergarten classroom, and it was absolutely a student favorite!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great book to use as a springboard for learning the science of the butterfly life cycle while learning literacy elements as well. This unit contains both literacy and science learning activities that your students will love. Teachers can use it during guided reading to have students work on learning story elements, reading comprehension, story sequencing, vocabulary, story mapping, and many other literacy skills.
This learning activity has students defining the story's setting, characters, and story events at the beginning, middle, and end.
The very hungry caterpillar eats a lot of food in the story! In this activity, students recall the story and use comprehension skills to sequence the story's events in order.
